Special Operations Glossary

The Special Forces community and the military services in general use a multitude of words, phrases, and acronyms in its vocabulary, documentation, correspondence, and publications.  This glossary is intended to aid those unfamiliar with specific special operations terminology.

UAR.  Unconventional Assisted Recovery.  NAR conducted by special operations forces (SOF).  (DODI 2310.6). Learn more about UAR and personnel recovery.

UARCC.  Unconventional Assisted Recovery Coordination Center.

UAV.  Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

UHF.  Ultra High Frequency.

UN.  United Nations.

Unconventional Warfare.  The following definition of UW is provided by USSOCOM: "Activities conducted to enable a resistance movement or insurgency to coerce, disrupt or overthrow an occupying power or government by operating through or with an underground, auxiliary and guerrilla force in a denied area".  Click here to learn more about unconventional warfare.

Underground. A group or movement organized to fight an existing regime or occupying power. Sometimes part of a larger resistance group along with a guerrilla force and auxiliary.

UNHCR.  United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

UNICEF.  United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.

UNPIK.  United Nations Partisan Infantry Korea.

UO. Urban Operations. UO replaced the term Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT). Read more about Urban Operations (UO).

USACAPOC.  United States Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command.

USAID.  United States Agency for International Development.

USAJFKSWCS.  United States John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.

USASFC.  United States Army Special Forces Command.  Comprised of five active duty and two National Guard Special Forces groups.

USASOC.  United States Army Special Operations Command.  Located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  Comprised of USASFC, 160th SOAR, Ranger Regiment and other associated special operations units.

USC.  United States Code.

USCENTCOM.  United States Central Command.

USEUCOM.  United States European Command.

USSOCOM.  United States Special Operations Command.

UTM.  Universal Transverse Mercator.

UW.  See Unconventional Warfare above.

UWO. Underwater Operations.  See Combat Diver.

UWOA.  Unconventional Warfare Operationing Area.

UXO.  Unexploded Ordnance.
