Special Operations Glossary

The Special Forces community and the military services in general use a multitude of words, phrases, and acronyms in its vocabulary, documentation, correspondence, and publications.  This glossary is intended to aid those unfamiliar with specific special operations terminology.

TA.  Target Audience.  Usually used in reference to MISO or PSYOP operations.  See target audience below.

TACLAN.  Tactical Local Area Network.

TACON.  Tactical Control.

TACP.  Tactical Air Control Party.

TACSAT.  Tactical Satellite Radio.

TAI.  Target Area of Interest.

TALCE.  Tanker Airlift Control Element.

TALOS. Tactical Assault Light Operator's Suit. Commonly referred to as the 'Iron Man Suit'. A future development project by USSOCOM for its operators. Learn more about TALOS here.

Target Audience.  "An individual or group selected for influence or attack by means of Psychological Operations".  (JP 1-02).

Task Force Orange. This organization was officially formed after the Iranian hostage crisis in 1981 and focuses on intelligence gathering, signals collection and other high-risk operations.

TASKORD.  Tasking Order.

TASOSC.  Theater Army Special Operations Support Command.

TBD.  To Be Determined.

TBMCS.  Theater Battle Management Core System.

TCAE.  Technical Control and Analysis Element.

TCN.  Third Country National.

TECHINT.  Technical Intelligence.

Terrorism.  "The calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear, intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological".  (JP 1-02).

TGO.  Terminal Guidance Operation.

Theme.  "A theme is a subject, topic, or line of persuasion used to achieve a psychological objective".  (FM 3-05.30).

TIP.  Target Intelligence Package.

TL.  Team Leader.

TLAM.  Tomahawk Land Attack Missile.

TLP.  Troop Leading Procedures.

TM.  Technical Manual.

TNT.  Trinitrotoluene.  TNT is a very common explosive for blasting charges and for military weapons.  It is used as a component in many other explosives as well.

TOC.  Tactical Operations Center.

TOE.  Table of Organization and Equipment.

TOW.  Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided.  An anti-tank missile.

TPC.  Tactical Pilotage Chart.

TPFDD.  Time Phased Force Deployment Data.

TPT.  Tactical Psychological Operations Team.

TRP. Target Reference Point.

TSOC.  Theater Special Operations Command.  As in SOCEUR or SOCSouth.

TST. Time Sensitive Target.

TSWG.  Technical Support Working Group of the Department of Defense.  The TSWG operates as a program element under the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO).  See www.tswg.gov.

TTP.  Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures.

TVA.  Threat Vulnerability Assessment.
